Dr. Ajay Dhawan has been serving as the Chief of Staff of VA Northern Indiana Health Care System since April 22, 2012. Prior to coming to VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, Dr. Dhawan was the Associate Chief of Staff, Bay Pines VA Medical Center, Bay Pines, Florida. He served in that role for 5 years before moving to Indiana. He had oversight and responsibility for a large and complex service comprised of 14 subspecialty programs staffed by 348 health professionals. He was tasked with planning and starting the biggest healthcare center (220,000 sq ft) in nation in Cape Coral, FL and was instrumental in completing the project on time and under budget.

Prior to that, he served in many leadership positions such as Clinical Director, VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic, Toledo, Ohio; Medical Director, Beardstown Clinic, VP Medical affairs at Culbertson Memorial Hospital, Rushville, Illinois, and Staff Physician, Family Practice Associates, Mt. Ayr, Iowa. Dr. Dhawan also worked as a Joint Commission Surveyor from 2005 to 2007.

Dr. Dhawan received his MBBS from Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, India between 1984 and 1989. He continued with Post-Doctoral Training as a resident in the Internal Medicine Department at Christian Medical College from 1989 to 1992. He then served as junior teaching faculty member at the General Medicine Government Medical College in Chandigarh, India from 1992 to 1994. He completed another residency at Michigan State University Associated Hospitals in East Lansing, Michigan from 1995 to 1997, where he earned the Best Resident Award in 1996.

Dr. Dhawan has been chosen to serve at both the VISN and National level to participate in emerging initiatives. Since 2010, he has been one of five primary care national consultants for Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACT). In this role, he visits other VAMCs to advise and assist them in their implementation of PACT. He also was a member of the Leadership and Planning Group for the National Risk Management Program, having served since 2009. He was formerly a member and chair of the Physician subcommittee for the National Utilization Management Advisory Council (NUMAC) from 2005 through 2008. At the VISN level, Dr. Dhawan had been chosen as the Chair of the Outpatient Systems Redesign (VISN 8) Committee and was a member of the Clinical Informatics and Emergency Preparedness (VISN 8) groups.

Dr. Dhawan is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is currently licensed in the states of Michigan and Florida.
